2021 Returning MLOA Requirements

The Maine Lacrosse Officials Association certifies adults to be US Lacrosse Level 1 Officials. Level 1 officials are able to officiate boys’ lacrosse from youth through high school. Certified officials will receive a Middle School / JV schedule.

Below is the training/application timeline.

February Requirements:

1. Join US Lacrosse or renew your USL membership. Web-based at USLacrosse.org.
  • Give USL the same email address that you will use for Arbiter!! 
  • Under Game Participation tab, indicate that you are an Official and a member of Maine Lacrosse Officials Association. 
  • Indicate that you need a NFHS Rule Book.
2. Order and complete the USL online Men’s Officiating Course (instructions at mloa.org/training). Complete the course before the kickoff meeting!
3. Download the USL Men’s Officiating Training Manual (see mloa.org/training). Print it out  or keep it on your computer / tablet / smartphone. Review the expectations of a Level 1 Official (page 3).
4. Join MLOA and pay dues. Instructions at MLOA.org. Contact Secretary@mloa.org.
5. Activate Arbitersports.com account and connect to MLOA. Contact Chief@mloa.org .

March Requirements:

6. Arrive by 12:30 to complete registration. If you haven’t paid dues, bring $25, in cash or as a
check payable to MLOA.
7. Attend kickoff meeting. Take notes. Bring your rule book and training manual.
8. Attend weekly classroom sessions. Study assigned material before each class. Contact Trainer@mloa.org.

9. Start / work on USL online tests for both NFHS and Youth rules (instructions at mloa.org/training). You can take the tests multiple times.
10. Update your contact information, travel limits and availability in Arbiter.
11. Attend MLOA Annual Meeting. Pay any remaining MLOA dues.
12. Acquire your uniform and equipment. Start early.

Pre-Season Requirements:

13. Finish taking the NFHS and Youth tests. You must pass both tests.
14. Demonstrate satisfactory mechanics at play-days, as assigned via Arbiter.
15. Required to be certified and receive a game schedule:
  • Boldface steps (1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14) recorded as complete
  • Satisfactory assessment from classroom instructors
  • 2021 Returning MLOA / USL Requirements

All Returning Maine Lacrosse Officials planning on officiating youth, high school lacrosse or MSAID lacrosse need to complete all of the following:

3 weeks before attending a clinic:

1. Join US Lacrosse or renew your USL membership. Visit http://USLacrosse.org.
2. Call USL at 410-235-6882 (dial 2 when the announcement starts):
  • Have your Game Participation changed to include being a Men’s Game Official
  • Ensure that you have YOUR own unique email address on file with USL and Arbiter.
  • Update your profile picture with a professional head shot of only you.
3. View the updated 2016 USL / NFHS rules video. This is a major rules change year.
4. Follow instructions from USL to gain access to the US Lacrosse Central Hub.
5. Download the USL Men’s Two-Person and Three-Person Mechanics Manual from the USL Central Hub. You can print it out or keep it on your computer / tablet / smartphone. Study expectations (p. 3) and mechanics (pp. 9-39). Bring questions to the clinic.

1 week before attending a clinic:

6. Study your rule book (see step 2). Bring questions to the clinic or email Josh Blaisdell.
7. Get started on the USL online tests for both NFHS and Youth rules, administered from the USL Central Hub (see instructions). You can take the tests multiple times. I would advise you to print out a PDF copy prior to taking the test. Prepare to ask about difficult questions prior to or at the clinic.

Day of Training:

8. Arrive by 5:45 PM to the designated location. Choose a location that best fits your schedule.
Note: you must attend only one of these sessions.
  • Thorton Academy in Saco on March 1st,
  • Auburn (TBA) March 9th
  • Lawrence High School on March 17th.

There will be Level 2 and Level 3 classes at each location. You will receive an event invitation via Arbiter to confirm your desired classroom location and to ensure that we have ample seats.
Level 2 officials are 2nd year and newer officials concentrating on two-man mechanics and umpire responsibilities
Level 3 training is designed for crew chiefs and will concentrate on three-man mechanics, referee responsibilities and game management techniques.

NILOA certified officials have fulfill their classroom requirements at the regional meetings, but will be asked to assist in level 2 & 3 trainings.

MASAID training will take place following the Kick-Off meeting at Bates College from 12:15-1:15pm on March 20th.

9. Be prepared to take notes. Bring your NFHS rule book and Two-Person and possibly Three- Person Mechanics manual.
10. Be an active, engaged, respectful participant, including both classroom.
11. Demonstrate official’s mechanics at a scrimmage or play day. (TBD in April 2016)

After the clinic:

12. Check and update your uniform and equipment. Attach the NEW MLOA Patch two inches below the left shoulder seem that you will receive at the March 20th Kick-Off meeting at Bates College.
13. Finish taking the tests. You must pass both the NFHS and Youth tests. Officials that want to be eligible to officiate MASAID need to also pass the NILOA test (Details to follow on NCAA test).
14. The MLOA Chief Referee will certify people who complete steps 1, 2, 3, 11, and 13. He will provide a list of certified Officials to the MLOA assignors.
15. Update availability in the Arbiter and continuously keep it up to date.
